Rare Republican Breaking with Trump on Iran War Vote
Massie and Rand Paul only Republicans who Abide by Original Intent of Constitution on War Vote

Former Congressman Jim Renacci is one of the few Republican voices opposing President Trump’s position on the war with Iran, offering a rare GOP perspective on the growing debate over presidential war powers.
What Just Happened:
The U.S. Senate and the House both narrowly voted against a War Powers Resolution that would have required Trump to obtain congressional approval before continuing U.S. military operations against Iran.
- The Senate resolution failed 47–53.
- The House resolution failed by 212-219
- Rand Paul was the only Republican senator who voted for the resolution in the Senate, opposing President Trump’s position.
- One Democrat, Sen. John Fetterman, voted with Republicans against the Senate measure.
- Thomas Massie of Kentucky and Warren Davidson of Ohio were the only two Republicans in the House who voted for the war restraining bill.
Congressman Jim Renacci says, “Under the War Powers Act, a president can typically conduct military operations for about 60 days without congressional authorization, followed by a 30-day withdrawal period, raising new questions about how long the Iran conflict could continue without a vote from Congress.”
Examples include:
- Kosovo (Clinton)
- Libya (Obama)
- Syria strikes (Trump and Biden)
So, the 60-day clock is often debated politically.
Why Renacci:
Renacci brings a rare Republican dissenting perspective on the issue and can discuss:
- Whether Congress should approve wars before they begin
- Divisions inside the Republican Party over Iran policy
- How this debate could affect the 2026 elections and GOP unity
