GOP Congressman Jim Renacci on the Fed’s Quarter-Point Rate Cut
Former Republican Congressman Jim Renacci, who served on the House Ways & Means Committee and the House Budget Committee, remains one of the very few Republicans willing to offer a candid counterpoint to President Trump’s economic policies.
Because he holds no political office and has nothing to fear, Renacci says what others won’t — and his forthrightness may encourage more Republicans to step forward, paving the way for a more reasoned approach to tariffs and, ultimately, helping tame inflation.
Renacci’s Statement/ Media opportunity
“The Federal Reserve’s quarter-point rate cut may sound encouraging, but it will do little to help families who are still feeling real economic pressure.
The Fed raised rates earlier because inflation was beginning to surge, even though Administration statisticians tried to present the numbers as harmless. Prices were rising sharply, driven in part by wild swings in tariff policy. Using tariffs strategically can be smart, but weaponizing them with sudden, unpredictable shifts creates unnecessary instability — and American consumers were stuck with the bill.
Now the Fed is trimming rates slightly — not because the economy is on solid footing, but because it is trying to unwind the consequences of those earlier disruptions.
What’s even more troubling is that this cut is happening while the Administration still refuses to provide a clear, honest picture of inflation. When the President won’t report accurate economic data, the Fed is forced to make decisions in the dark. That does not inspire confidence, nor does it help American households.
A quarter-point cut doesn’t reverse rising prices. It doesn’t restore lost purchasing power. And it doesn’t fix the erratic policy mix that helped create the problem. Until Washington delivers honesty, transparency, and steady leadership, these small adjustments will remain symbolic rather than substantive.”
